I had one of those weeks this week where it was very clear that things were much farther beyond my control than I possibly thought. Health issues just seemed to be mounting up all at once, not only with our battle against breast cancer, but also my mother's planned knee and unexpected pacemaker surgery. If I ever thought I had things under control, this week provided I definitely don't. It was just a lot to deal with all at once. You know you're in it deep when you are text messaging your pastor via cell phone from Las Vegas!
I talked to my dad this morning, the day after mom's surgery, and prior to an important doctor appointment of my wife's. As happens, dad had just the right words to say to me. He reminded me of a Winston Churchill quote;
"When you get to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on."
Winston Churchill was famous for his tenacity for never giving up. No matter what the odds, how strong the enemy, or how tired the country might be from bombings or executing war plans. Churchill had the fortitude and courage to inspire England and her allies to hang in there, even during some very dark hours in history.
It's been a long day and I'm really too tired to wax on poetic about the philosophy of Churchill's quote and how it applies to breast cancer, so I won't. Dad's advance was just what I needed, when I needed it. I'm glad he was there by cell phone to offer it.
Thanks Dad.
