I don't get it. Walk into just about any oncologist's office where chemo "is served" and what do you find sitting at the front counter, waiting areas, and next to just about every station delivering chemo to patients? A jar or bowl filled with candy.
Why's this an issue for me? This easiest way to explain it is explain how
doctors detect breast (and other) cancers. PET scans identify "hot spots"
of metabolic activity in the body, indicating fast growing cancer is present.
These metabolic hot spots are detected by first injecting the patient with a
radioactive laced glucose "sugar cocktail". The to-be-scanned patient then must
lie or sit very, very still for a 45 minute period while the nuclear glucose
travels to parts of the body where energy is needed, the hottest spots being
where cancer is present since cancer cells have such a higher metabolic rate
than normal cells. The patient can't raise or move their arms, clench their jaw,
or even watch TV, as any activity beyond remaining perfectly still could result
in false positive readings.
Following this inactive period with radioactive glucose traveling around the body, a PET scan is performed to identify where the body is consuming the most energy -- concentrations of cancer cells if they are present. The radioactive agent is what is used to track the glucose injected into the body. Glucose of course is sugars, processed from foods we consume to fuel our bodies.
Many, including me, who believe nutrition is the key to enabling your body to
fight off cancer cells present within the body, see sugar as the enemy,
particularly non-natural forms such as refined sugars in highly concentrated
forms - candy, corn syrup, sweeteners, etc. While the body turns the food we
consume into glucose our bodies burn for energy, why exacerbate the problem by
giving cancer the upper hand with super intense forms that overload the
bloodstream with sugars. Sugar is like crack for cancer.
So while your spouse is being injected with toxic chemicals to kill cancer cells in the body, the other hand is reaching into the "cancer crack jar" giving cancer cells a huge boost with refined sugar.
Is this all some cancer industry conspiracy, like nicotine and added addictive chemicals in cigarettes? Probably not, but it shows how the medical industry refuses to recognize and connect good nutrition with good health, especially when battling a health crisis situation like breast cancer. I don't care how much research or studies are out there or not. This just makes common sense.
So show your wife you love her - take away the candy. And doctors, do us all a favor and bring in some natural food snacks like an organic carrot, apple, orange or something healthy. Better yet, how about a juice bar.

Very informative post - unified doctor's offices with typical practices do tend to follow trends.
