I love this story. Fort Dodge, Iowa, company Mid Country Machinery shows solidarity for a customer whose wife has breast cancer by painting two brand new lifts pink, sporting support for the Susan G. Komen foundation. The article says Bud PeCoy is behind the idea. They are donating a portion of the rental revenues, estimated at $25-30k, to the local Susan G. Komen chapter.
It combines a good deed by a business and support for someone battling breast cancer. A 2-fer of sorts. What a great thing for a business to do for a customer. This sounds like something out of the Extreme Makeover: Home Edition genre of supporting people in need.
As guys, and husbands, we want to fix cancer for our wives but we can't, not like we'd fix a leak or patch up an injury. So when we can't follow our normal instincts, we'll come up with some creative and often *big* ways to do what we can. Does it make us feel better? A little. But it's about letting the people we love know we care, we hurt, and care deeply. We might not shed a tear, but we can build a shed, paint it pink and scream "I love you, Babe!" if that's what it takes to let that voice inside us show how we feel.
Ironically, we also show our support privately and in small ways. It might be an anonymous donation in a friend's name, cooking dinner for a change, going to a doctor's appointment when we have plenty or reasons not to, or finally getting to that long ignored item on our honey do list. (Oh shez, that reminds me...!) A big "o"-vation to Bud and the crew at Mid Country Machinery. I wish more businesses did things like this.
So, if you work with someone battling breast cancer, other types of cancer, health issues or other troubles life sends our way, maybe Bud's idea will inspire you to show that person that you and your company cares. What a cool thing to do.
